PATRICK CAO, Piano (Winner, 2023 Don Chrylser Concerto Competition)

The Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra presents an afternoon of music featuring three beautiful works.

Schubert’s Overture in D Major (in the Italian style), D.590 is a lively and happy overture full of imagination and tuneful melodies.  Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No.2 in D minor, Op.40, performed by 12-year-old Patrick Cao, winner of the 2023 Don Chrysler Concerto Competition, is a true masterpiece and showcases Mendelssohn’s incredible talent as a composer and pianist.

Finally, the orchestra will perform Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1. This symphony shows young Beethoven’s true rebel spirit, as well as his wonderful sense of humour. It is played as a homage to the Sooke Philharmonic founder, Norman Nelson, who programmed this piece in the orchestra’s inaugural concert, 25 years ago.
