SCHUMANN Symphony No. 1 in B-flat major, Op. 38 “Spring”

Join the Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra and Matty Angus, winner of the 2025 Jenny and Norman Nelson Competition, for the Spring Concert on Sunday April 12, 2:30 pm at the Community Hall.

Matty Angus, clarinet, will be performing the von Weber Clarinet Concerto No.1. As well as placing first in the SPO competition, Angus won at the Silverstein Clarinet  Contest last July and is a member of the National Youth Orchestra. The 17 year-old is a student at SMUS in Victoria.

The von Weber is one of the clarinet concertos most loved by players and audiences alike.

Also on the program, another von Weber work, the lively Overture to Der Freischutz, a Romantic opera composed in 1821.

The orchestra will also perform Schumann's Symphony No. 1, also known as the Spring Symphony, which celebrates the coming of spring, written in 1841 when Schumann was newly married to the famous pianist Clara. This symphony is full of delight and exuberance.
