VERDI Nabucco Overture

SCRIABIN Piano concerto No. 1 in F# Minor, Op. 20

Soloist: Leah MacFarlane, winner of the 2025 Jenny & Norman Nelson Concerto Competition

BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67

The first concert of the 25-26th season takes place Sunday, November 2nd at the Sooke Community Hall at 2:30 pm, Yariv Aloni conducting. Soloist Leah Macfarlane plays Scriabin’s Piano Concerto No 1. Also on the program are the Nabucco Overture by Verdi and Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony.

Macfarlane won first place in the keyboard portion of the Jenny and Norman Nelson Concerto Competition in May. The Scriabin piano concerto, composed in 1896, is a passionate and romantic work with soaring piano runs and beautiful, haunting harmonies.  It has been rediscovered after years of neglect.

Nabucco is one of Verdi’s best-known operas and the Overture includes its famous themes including the Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves.

The opening bars of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 are well recognized by all Classical music fans.  The Fifth is exciting, dramatic and never grows old.  Come and share the joy and passion!
